Campaign
The Fair Flags campaign, calls on supermarkets and other retailers to recognise and fairly treat all the constituent countries of the United Kingdom.
We have many examples where Scottish food is labelled as Scottish, but English food is labelled as British. This is insulting both to the English, who may feel their country is being ignored, and to the Scottish who may feel excluded from Britain.
This happens both in promotional material, such as the labelling of produce with flags, and in the detailed labelling with producers listed as, for example from Perthshire, Scotland, but Herefordshire, UK.
Professor Anthony King, in a recent report, criticised the BBC for its London-centric views and confusion of England and Britain. Politicians have also faced calls for more clarity when describing the extent of their policies.
Supermarkets are a powerful force in our lives, and like politicians and journalists, we must demand the highest standards of accuracy from them.
At this time there is great consumer interest in the origin of food, be it concern over animal welfare standards or a desire to reduce the environmental costs associated with food transportation. As supermarkets meet these consumer demands with more detailed labelling, it is the perfect time to recognise the importance of accurate national origin labelling.
We at Fair Flags believe that the incorrect use of England to mean Britain and Britain to mean England is insulting to all nations of the UK. We believe supermarkets play an important role in people’s everyday lives and their current labelling policies entrench this problem. We therefore call on retailers to treat all the nations of the UK fairly and equally when labelling the origins of their produce.
