FAQ

1. Isn’t labelling a trivial matter?
While we believe that the West Lothian Question and Barnett formula are more important issues to England, many English consumers and producers will not find this a trivial matter. The confusion of England and Britain in supermarkets helps to normalise it in every aspect of life. And as they say, every little helps.

2. Why do the supermarkets do this?
We don’t know exactly. They seem to believe there is a market for Scottish and Welsh produce but not English. They may also believe the Scots and Welsh would be put off by English flags in a way the English aren’t by the Scottish and Welsh flags. There also exists an ingrained confusion between England and Britain in supermarkets as in society, one we hope to challenge.

3. What do you hope to achieve?
Well first and foremost to persuade the major supermarkets to adopt a fair and equal labelling strategy for all the countries of the UK. But also to raise awareness of the general issues surrounding our different nations and how they interact, especially post devolution.

4. You are English. What do you have against Scottish or Welsh produce?
Nothing, we are more than happy to buy food from Scotland and Wales, but we want the option to buy from England too, to support our local farmers if we so choose. We don’t want special treatment and many Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish people feel they are losing out when England and Britain are equated too. We want the campaign to grow across the UK.

5. Why labelling for England, NI, Scotland and Wales? Why not Britain?
We would prefer to see Britain used consistently than the individual nations used wrongly, but believe there are customers in all the home nations who would wish to buy homegrown food. More information is always better than less, when it comes to making an informed choice to buy a product.

6. How can I help?
If you have a blog or website link to our campaign. Most of all write to your supermarket. They are out to make money, if enough consumers complain they will have to listen to us.
